What Does LEAN Mean? Definition & Core Principle


LEAN means reducing the lead time of a process to an absolute minimum—by systematically identifying, minimizing, and completely eliminating waste (Muda).


The LEAN approach makes a fundamental distinction between two forms:

  1. Obvious waste:
    Immediately apparent inefficiencies such as long lead times, defective components, or unused materials.
  2. Hidden Waste:
    Activities that appear necessary but do not add direct value to the product—such as unnecessary search and retrieval paths, oversized intermediate storage areas, or redundant documentation steps.

To make waste in everyday industrial operations more tangible, the LEAN philosophy categorizes it into seven core areas:

1. Transportation: Unnecessary movement of materials and workpieces between workstations.

2. Inventory: Excessive buffer stock that ties up capital and takes up space.

3. Movement (Motion): Unnecessary or non-ergonomic walking and reaching patterns among employees.

4. Downtime: Production stoppages due to missing materials, delayed deliveries, or machine jams.

5. Overproduction: The production of parts that are not currently needed or requested.

6. Overprocessing: Unnecessarily complex process steps or quality characteristics that offer no benefit to the customer.

7. Defects & Rework: Defective products that result in additional time and material costs.
